Accoya Timber
Read more
Accoya is a revolutionary high-performance wood, created through a patented acetylation process that permanently modifies the cellular structure of the timber, making it virtually unaffected by water or environmental degradation. While other conventional wood treatments only modify the surface, Accoya deeply modifies the wood. Since its introduction in 2007, this proven technology has gained the trust of architects, manufacturers, and homeowners from around the world. More than 500,000 landmark projects demonstrate the exceptional performance of Accoya.
At its core, Accoya is wood uncompromised combining the natural beauty and workability of timber with the durability and stability previously available only in synthetic materials. Backed by over 20 years of innovation and experience, Accoya is the global leader in high-performance wood.
How is Accoya Made?
The Acetylation Process
The manufacturing process at Accoya begins with raw materials from sustainable timber supplied from FSC-certified forests. By employing a proprietary acetylation treatment, the wood is chemically modified right down to the basic cell structure.
-
The Process:
Wood is treated in a controlled environment with acetic anhydride - Acetyl groups penetrate and bond with the cellular structure of wood.
- This permanent modification fills the cell cavities and cross-links the wood polymers.
- The result is a wood product with properties fundamentally changed, which cannot revert.
Key Benefit: The treated wood can no longer absorb moisture, the single biggest contributor to swelling, shrinking, warping, and decaying in traditional wood. This is a permanent chemical change, demonstrated and supported by more than twenty years of field performance.
Quality Standards
The manufacturing process is carefully controlled to ensure that every board meets the highest possible standards. Accoya remains structurally sound with virtually no movement before, during, and for decades after installation. The result is wood that arrives straight and stays straight, even in harsh climates.
