Accoya Cladding
Read more
Accoya wood cladding is made from sustainably sourced timber treated through acetylation. This process enhances the durability and stability of the wood. Exterior wall cladding on residential and commercial buildings uses this material, which looks like natural wood but with improved performance.
How is Accoya Cladding Made?
Accoya wood undergoes acetylation, a process whereby acetic anhydride is introduced into the wood cells. This molecular modification makes the wood:
- Highly resistant to rot and decay
- Dimensionally stable-minimal warping or swelling
- Resistant to insect attack
- Suitable for exterior exposure without toxic treatments
- The wood is FSC-certified and comes from responsibly managed, fast-growing forests.
Key features of Accoya cladding
Durability
Accoya cladding is resistant to extreme weather conditions, UV radiation, and sudden changes in temperature. It is resistant to decay, splitting, and significant distortion. It is backed by a 50-year warranty and can achieve a 60-year service life, making it suitable for long-term building projects.
High Stability
The wood has minimal movement, with boards staying flat in place over time. This enables wider board profiles-up to 200mm-and reduced visible gaps or warping compared to other timber cladding options.
Low Maintenance
Accoya cladding can be left uncoated to weather naturally or treated with finishes for custom colors. Unlike many timber claddings, it does not require frequent repainting or re-coating. It simply needs regular cleaning.
Coating Performance
Accoya outperforms all other timber claddings when coated. Testing indicates that it resists surface checking, cracking, fissuring, and paint peeling. It maintains a flat surface and clean finish longer than alternatives.
Natural Wood Appearance
Naturally weathering real wood cladding over time or retaining colour if coated. It provides an authentic aesthetic without the drawbacks of untreated timber.
Accoya vs. Other Cladding Materials
Accoya vs. Western Red Cedar
Western red cedar is a softwood that is prone to fast weathering; it needs maintenance. Accoya is modified to be highly stable and durable, resistant to coatings, and has a longer service life.
Accoya vs. Tropical Hardwoods
Other tropical hardwoods, such as blackbutt and spotted gum, are durable but from slow-growing trees and raise sustainability concerns. Accoya offers comparable performance from sustainably sourced, fast-growing timber.
Accoya vs. Pressure-Treated Pine
On the other hand, pressure-treated timber includes chemical preservatives and is less stable. Accoya achieves durability via molecular modification without toxic additives.
Accoya vs. Thermally Modified Timber (TMT)
TMT is heat-treated, though it is less stable than Accoya. Accoya has better dimensional stability and a longer warranty coverage.
Accoya vs. WPC (Wood-Plastic Composite)
WPC is manufactured from plastic and wood fiber. Accoya is 100% real wood, it's recyclable, and it doesn't have the environmental impact of plastic-based materials.
Accoya Cladding Colours
Natural Accoya Cladding
Real wood that naturally weathers to a silvery-grey over time. Can be left uncoated or finished with translucent stains, opaque coatings, or charred finishes.
Accoya Slate Grey Cladding
Core-dyed wood with a uniform anthracite-grey colour. Because colour is integrated into the wood, not a surface coating, it will not fade or peel. Recommended for modern aesthetics.
